We are at a pivotal moment in hydropower development and your expertise is crucial. The Hydropower Sustainability Alliance invites you to participate in the public consultation for our newest initiative, HYDROSELECT—an innovative tool for making informed, responsible decisions in the early stages of hydropower projects.
The consultation paper was prepared with the multistakeholder Working Group on Early Stage Decision Making, made up of representatives of the four chambers of the HS Council. The paper is structured to gather your insights on its ratings, three-part structure, and thematic focus areas.

In the early stages of hydropower project development, making the right decisions is critical. Often, projects begin without up-to-date information on energy, water, or land assets, leading to significant investments in sites that may have underlying issues. These issues could be so severe that they result in costly development processes or, in some cases, complete abandonment.
HYDROSELECT is developed to tackle this problem head-on. This tool allows for an early assessment of multiple project options, helping to rank them according to their potential benefits and sustainability. It identifies which projects are worth pursuing and which are too risky or not valuable enough to develop.
Early Decisions Matter
An early assessment helps avoid committing to projects that might seem promising but have significant hidden problems. This not only saves time and money but also ensures that only the most sustainable projects move forward. By identifying potential issues early on, developers can make better choices about where to allocate their resources.
