Sustainability assessment overview
The Fljótsdalsstöð/Kárahnjúkar hydropower project was first assessed in 2017 using the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol (HSAP), showing strong sustainability performance. In 2024, a new assessment confirmed that the project continues to perform at a high level, with improvements in some areas. It complies with all sustainability commitments, supported by extensive monitoring and effective management of environmental issues.
The project also has an exceptionally low carbon footprint of 1.2 gCO2e/kWh. At the corporate level, sustainability is fully integrated into operations and transparently reported through the company’s Annual Report, following international standards like GRI and CDP.
The public consultation period for the Assessment Report of the Fljótsdalsstöð project ended on 11 March 2025.
