With a longstanding history, hydropower has been a pivotal player in Europe's clean energy transition. The hydropower sector plays a key role in supporting Europe’s clean energy transition to reach its international climate objectives. Representing approximately one-third of the renewable energy sources in the European Union, hydropower continues to be a reliable and sustainable contributor to the region's energy landscape.
Albania
We have partnered with Albanian Power Corporation (KESH) to deliver a capacity building programme to support projects in Albania and Western Balkans implement international good practices. The programme was sponsored by Swiss Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). Through a series of trainings, workshops and a self-assessment, the programme culminated in an assessment of Skavica HPP in June 2023.

Iceland

We have a close relationship with Landsvirkjun in Iceland. The developer has assessed three projects using the predecessor of the HS Standard and trained its staff to conduct internal assessments in preparation for official HS Standard assessments. Landsvirkjun has also piloted the Geothermal Sustainability Assessment Protocol on their projects, which was developed on the basis of our sustainability framework in collaboration with the International Geothermal Association. Plans are in place to develop a Geothermal Sustainability Standard, which we are supporting them with.
