New planning course now included with HSS assessments

The Hydropower Sustainability Alliance (HSA) has introduced a new online course to help project teams prepare effectively for assessments under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard (HSS).

The HSS Assessment Planning course is now included as part of the assessment and certification process, providing participating companies with tailored training to ensure their projects are well prepared for a smooth and successful assessment.

Designed for project developers and staff involved in coordinating an assessment, the course offers step-by-step guidance on how to plan, coordinate, and manage all aspects of the process, from internal preparation to on-site logistics.

Helping projects plan for success

Participants will gain a clear understanding of the phases, timelines, and roles involved in an HSS assessment, along with practical tools to allocate time and resources efficiently. The course also provides templates and examples to help project teams structure internal coordination and evidence preparation.

“This training is about helping companies approach their assessment with confidence,” said Amina Kadyrzhanova, Senior Sustainability Specialist at HSA. “By learning how to plan and coordinate effectively, project teams can maximise the value they get from assessment experience and take the experience forward to future projects.”

Included with every HSS assessment

The Assessment Planning course is exclusively available to companies that have committed to undertaking an HSS assessment. Once the project owner has registered their interest and paid the registration fee, the course is made available to the project team as part of their preparation phase.

“An HSS assessment is a learning journey as much as it is an evaluation,” added Amina. “This course ensures that participants are fully equipped to engage with assessors, manage logistics and documentation, and make the experience as efficient and insightful as possible.”

The course is part of HSA’s growing suite of online learning opportunities that support hydropower developers in aligning their projects with global sustainability best practices.
