First public consultation opens for Hydropower Sustainability Standard review
The Hydropower Sustainability Alliance (HSA) has opened the first public consultation of the inaugural review of the Hydropower Sustainability Standard (HSS).
This marks the first formal review of the HSS since its launch in 2021, and forms part of HSA’s commitment, as a member of the ISEAL Alliance, to review it every five years.
The review aims to ensure the HSS remains relevant, clear and aligned with evolving global expectations around sustainability, ESG performance and responsible hydropower development.
This first consultation is a high-level strategic review focused on the titles, principles and scope of the 12 HSS sections, alongside selected high-level aspects of the Theory of Change and Assurance System. More detailed technical requirements will be explored during a second consultation later this year.
How to take part in the HSS review public consultation
The consultation is open to stakeholders across industry, finance, civil society, academia, governments, Indigenous Peoples and local communities. No specialist expertise is required to take part.
Consultation materials and the submission form are available in English, French, Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian. The consultation will remain open until 10 July 2026.
